Capital Update: We're Still Walking

John Ayscough has a public artwork emblazoned on our building. We Walked Out of the Wilderness is a huge neon piece that stretches across The Auxiliary facade. It is a sentence that always makes me think. Have we walked out of the wilderness? And which wilderness? The past three years, both in England and across the globe, have seemed more tumultuous than most. And it’s not over yet.

Within The Auxiliary, the things we set about changing are now beginning to happen.

Foremost to our minds on these cold winter days is working on the plans that will see the building renovated and refurbished. Our vision to increasing studio holder provision in the Tees Valley, as well as making our studios warm, dry and accessible, is becoming a reality. We are working almost daily with De Matos Ryan architects and Middlesbrough Council so that this time next year, we are in fact standing in new surroundings. Working on a capital project is a brand new journey for us, and one full of ideas, questions and deviations. As things progress, and we move towards the start of the refurbishment, we will share the plans of what the building will look like.

And the sign will stay. We're still walking.
