Creative Arc is a grassroots, cultural exchange programme linking The Tees Valley with Detroit.
Beginning in October 2017, the first strand of the project consisted of a research phase that saw Liam Slevin travel to Detroit to identify possible collaborative partners and establish a network of artist-led initiatives.
Popps Packing was the host organization for this trip. Read more about the work Popps do here.
During a number of group discussions and one on one meetings focusing on the similarities between Detroit and the Tees Valley, Liam and Detroit artists and cultural producers discussed the importance of artistic agency, legacy and urgency in the face of economic hardship.
In March 2018 Graem Whyte, co-director of Popps Packing, visited the Tees Valley. Graem met with several local artists and presented a talk at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA), where he discussed his own practice and different artist-led initiative he has developed and implemented across Detroit.
