Painting: politics, practice and pedagogy - LEGACY: 50 Years of Painting in Tees Valley.

Conversations in Painting; an exhibition curated by Sarah Cooney and Philip Gatenby back in November 2019. It embraced a selective review of non-representational approaches to fine art practice. With Public events and workshops that were scheduled throughout the duration of the show that brought together guest practitioner, curators, writers, students and members of the public as co-participants in seminars and panel discussions.

This exhibition brought together 30 artists to tell a story of painting in Tees Valley spanning the last 50 years. Conversations in Painting traced the lineage of painters who have influenced and supported each other in a huge variety of ways. In this legacy exhibition established and emerging practices sat side by side to detail and acknowledge the impact and importance of painting in contemporary art; to highlight painters who have taught, mentored and championed each other marking a continued sharing of knowledge and generosity across generations.
