Sonic Arts Week
Sonic Arts Week! Yep, it's back for round three, and this time, it's taking over the lively streets and public spaces of Middlesbrough. Curated by the team from The Auxiliary Project Space, SAW is your ticket to cranking up the volume.
Let your ears take the lead and dive into the fun with us between 22 - 29 June #comejointheracket
Newbie alert! If you're new to SAW, let's get you in sync. SAW is where sound, art and play get messy with one another! It's not your typical music scene or art exhibit—it's a delightful blend of both, with a generous dose of quirkiness. Best part? All our events are free, open to everyone, and mostly kid-friendly. It's like tuning into life with your ears wide open.
Confused? Don't worry, so are we sometimes! Check out the highlights from 2023 to get a taste of the madness.
Over the years we’ve cruised down the River Tees with wireless headphone sets playing music made from the River Tees. In 2019 we created this using the vibrational sounds of the bridges along the Tees, and in 2021 we recorded underwater. We've transformed bikes into musical instruments that turn air quality into music and rocked lunchtime concerts at Centre Square. We’ve taken over captain Cook Square with a dance troupe DnB rave and had a giant sound horn wheeled around town.
Now that you're caught up, let's talk SAW24. This year, Encounters is back, injecting SAW's trademark playfulness into the heart of the town. Get ready for performances that will blow your mind, sound walks that'll tickle your eardrums, radio shows that'll make you groove, and workshops that'll spark creativity in the little ones. Oh and we have ye old time bus sonic tour as well.
